Just finished my bird sentinel costume for jeffrey bliss's new movie. i will post some pictures...
tonight at 8 i have an opening at SACRED GALLERY, i made a piece i blogged about a while back for ricky powell, a painting over his photo of marv albert, and its showing with some other work tonight, chances with wolves will dj.
i want to write because i had a great studio visit from mly friend joey...he talked mostly about my in progress work, my 3d painting and the brothers geller, but also, as it was his first time visiting my house, about everything he noticed, patternwise, thematically, in my portfolio.
he mentioned the issue of "personal narrative" and how hard it can be to express it and work with it in art. He mentioned how excited i got telling the story behind each piece (ie: the tailor) and questioned my approach to concept/texture/material relations. he loved the 3d but thought the frame was me being afraid. he picked up on a tension i feel in my work that i have a hard time expressing. he loved the wood jess-- who i dont think i have photographed for my blog- but now i wonder if she should be in my portfolio too.
his thoughts on borthers gleler were that i was formally working with structure, one side of hte pianting is the 2 brothers, and the chess/checkerboard is the CENTRAL focus of hte piece, also built into the framing device., the other side he said, represented a duality, a chaos, an anti-structure, so i immediately thought that there would have to be antoehr way for me to approach the visualization of space. i have decided, therefore, to transform the wooden area between teh checkers into a continuation ofhte depiction of water. and the gold leafed area will be the signage of the chess pieces. sorry to be so inarticulate. i gave jake rabinbach a picture, framed, on camera, during the last shoot for open five 2, which was taking place at the actual opening of open five, and it was something i made on teh train coming into the city from thankgiving upstate, i took the ny times review of open five (which was pretty bad) and framed it, and using my pocket knife i cut out newspaper letters like a ransome note, and using chewing gum, i affixed them to the review so that on top of the article it read: dear jake, "i have a bigger dick than you and so does my art" love z. i bought the frame at hte grand central station cvs. i made the thing on the f train between 42nd st and dumbo. it was really fun.
can this go in my portfolio? the story shoud. i am fierce, thanks ray. for letting me know.
